Bind Runes: How to Create & Use Combined Elder Futhark Symbols
A bind rune is two or more Elder Futhark runes merged into a single symbol — a personal sigil created for a specific intention. It is one of the most powerful and unique aspects of rune practice, with no equivalent in tarot or other divination systems.
What Is a Bind Rune?
In Viking Age practice, bind runes (also called bindruner in Old Norse) were carved onto weapons, jewelry, tools, and amulets to channel the combined energy of multiple runes into a single focused symbol. Archaeological finds from the Viking Age show bind runes on swords, brooches, and runestones throughout Scandinavia.
Unlike drawing a rune in a reading — where the rune speaks to you — a bind rune is an act of intention. You choose the runes. You combine them deliberately. You create something personal and specific.
How Bind Runes Work
Bind runes operate on the principle that combining symbols concentrates and focuses their energies toward a single purpose. The runes chosen should complement each other — their meanings should build toward the same goal, not contradict each other.
A bind rune is typically:
- Worn as jewelry — engraved on a pendant to carry its energy daily
- Carved on an object — on a wooden talisman, a stone, or meaningful personal item
- Used in ritual — drawn during intention-setting practice
5 Classic Bind Rune Combinations
ᚠ + ᛉ — Fehu + Algiz: Wealth Protection
Fehu brings the energy of abundance and earned wealth. Algiz provides protection and boundaries. Together: protect what you have built, guard your resources, draw wealth while defending against loss. Ideal for business owners, investors, or anyone navigating financial change.
ᚨ + ᚱ — Ansuz + Raidho: Clear Journey
Ansuz governs communication, clarity, and divine inspiration. Raidho governs movement, journey, and right order. Together: clear communication on the path ahead, inspired direction, aligned travel — physical or metaphorical. Ideal for writers, speakers, travelers, and those making major life transitions.
ᛏ + ᚢ — Tiwaz + Uruz: Warrior Strength
Tiwaz is the rune of justice, courage, and sacred sacrifice. Uruz is the rune of raw physical and mental strength. Together: the courage to act rightly even when it costs something, disciplined strength, victory through integrity. Ideal for challenges requiring both power and principle.
ᛒ + ᚹ — Berkano + Wunjo: Love & New Beginnings
Berkano governs birth, nurturing, and new growth. Wunjo governs joy, harmony, and belonging. Together: the blossoming of a new relationship, the joy of new beginnings, nurturing love into something lasting. Ideal for new relationships, welcoming new life, or healing after loss.
ᛉ + ᛁ — Algiz + Isa: Ultimate Protection
Algiz is the protective rune — the elk raising its antlers in defense. Isa is the ice rune — stillness, freezing, stopping movement. Together: an energetic shield that stops harmful forces, freezes negative influence, and creates a protected stillness. One of the most powerful protective bind runes.
How to Create Your Own Bind Rune
- Set your intention clearly. The more specific your intention, the more focused your bind rune. "I want protection" is good. "I want protection for my family during this transition" is better.
- Choose 2-3 runes whose meanings build toward your intention. More than 3-4 runes can muddy the energy — keep it focused.
- Combine the staves (lines). Overlay the symbols so they share a central vertical line (the stave) or merge naturally. Experiment until the combined shape feels balanced.
- Activate it with intention. Carve, draw, or engrave your bind rune while holding your intention clearly in mind. In Norse tradition, you might trace the symbol, speak your intention aloud, or breathe on it.
- Use it consistently. Wear it, carry it, place it where it serves your intention.
Carry Your Bind Rune
The most powerful way to use a bind rune is to wear it — to have it in physical contact with you throughout the day. A pendant engraved with your personal bind rune becomes a constant reminder of your intention and a channel for its energy.
